SMART Goal Setting – How To Set and Achieve SMART Goals

Ask 10 self help gurus about goal setting and you might just get 10 different strategies on how to set meaningful, smart goals that will actually help you change your life and achieve something worth mentioning. Then again, many, or maybe even most, of the gurus might use the general goal setting strategy called SMART goal setting as the basis for their specific strategy.

What is SMART Goal Setting?

What is SMART goal setting? SMART is an mnemonic acronym that generally stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-Bound. I say generally because over the years different “gurus” have used the letters to refer to different things.

For instance, while Specific and Measurable are typically used by just about everybody, some have used attainable, actionable, action-oriented, etc, in place of Achievable. Relevant has been replaced with result-based, results-oriented, or realistic, to name a few. Finally, while time is time, Time-Bound has been tweaked to include the likes of time-oriented, time-framed, or time-sensitive. You know how gurus are…they all like to add their special “spin” whenever possible, and smart goal setting is no exception.

Some even teach you how to set SMARTER goals…adding an E for Evaluate and a R for Reevaluate. Then too, evaluate has a number of alternatives including evaluated, excitable, enjoyable or engaging. And, reevaluate has been changed up to mean reviewed, rewarded, reassess or relevant.

Funny how S stands for specific most of the time and yet there isn’t a whole lot “specific” about what SMART goal setting stands for. 🙂

With that said, instead of me trying to write a short dissertation about setting SMART goals, or goals in general, I’ve found a number of good videos that I believe will cover the subject well enough to get you started, so check those out below. If you’d prefer to read a more detailed, yet simple, explanation on SMART goal setting I recommend wikipedia and wikihow.
